I'm a PPL with 180 hours (37 sim, 32 PIC) in a C172S/G trying to build up to 250 with 50 PIC for commercial. I stopped instrument training at a flight school mid-way for financial reasons. I have no desire to go to the airlines or be a CFI.

2022.01.21 09:26 Chen_Geller Opinion: Lets not make a religion out of practical effects
Amazon deliberately shaped their recent teaser to emphasize the "hand-crafted" quality of the show: the teaser was achieved using macro-photography like had been done on Tree of Life and 2001: A Space Odyssey. As was the case in both those films, this was the work of consulting special effects supervisor, Douglas Trumbull.
I enjoy the novelty of the macro-photography and Trumbull's involvement as much as the next man, but I think its important to note that no-one had known how this was achieved until we were told: people just assumed (and the uninformed still do) that its CGI.
Sure, a lot of that has to do with the nature of high-speed macro-photography: we don't typically see wood this close up nor flickering flames so slowed-down. But I think more importantly it speaks to the fact that we're not as good as discerning how an effect is achieved as we'd like to think.
And that's really my point, and its one that I think needs as much empahsis as possible, so here goes:
I DON'T CARE HOW AN EFFECT IS ACHIEVED, ONLY HOW IT LOOKS Film and TV fan-community had taken analog - analog effects, analog photography - and hallowed it; turned it into a religion. Practical effects = good; VFX = bad. Filmstock = good; pixels = bad.
I have several issues with this approach. One is that I think it totally drowns-out any critical thinking, because so many discussions around films and TV shows become completely dominated by it. Its much easier to speak in terms of "CGI sucks" than to actually try and verbalize the themes behind the story and how they're expressed in the storytelling, the psychology of the characters and how its explored by filmmaker and actor, the use of blocking and composition as a storytelling device and so forth. Those things are hard, so we just resort to talking about, frankly, one of the least-important aspects of filmmaking, which would be the effects.
But really, its just the religiosity we invest into this that I detest. It reeks of the reactionary and the conservative, and I don't think art - especially an art so inherently technological as film - can really withstand this sort of close-mindedness.
Its also just such a half-truth, especially this idea that practical effects age better than CGI. There are just as many practical effects that had not really withstood the test of time as there are composites and CGI: puppets that feel all too doll-like, animatronics that may or may not look very good but whose movements are stiff and unconvincing (the 1978 King Kong comes to mind), prosthetics that looks extremly plastic-y and unexpressive (the Gammorian guards from Return of the Jedi spring to mind), matte paintings that look completely flat and static, models that don't actually look biger than...well, a model, and on and on.
Ultimately, this idea that a film should "be done all practically unless something absolutely must be done CGI" is much more fanciful than it is sensible: The Lord of the Rings trilogy for sure WASN'T done that way: even in Fellowship of the Ring which is often hailed as the most analog of the bunch, there are many things that were CGI that didn't strictly have to be CGI: could they not have built more of the entrance to Bree rather than build a gate and fill-in the rest with CGI? Could they not have actually built a part of the stairs of Khazad-Dum rather than putting the actors on a green-screen and compositing-in a model? Could they not have Sean Astin in a water-tank rather than CGI the water? They had even considered making Gollum part prosthetic or part puppet, but decided against it.
Even other filmmakers who take pride on supposedly working with this approach are more talk than actual deeds: Christopher Nolan takes pride in doing things for real: he recently said Tenet had less VFX shots than a sitcom. It a very cute statement - its also entirely untrue. Tenent, like all of Nolan's films, has about 300 VFX shots. Not a lot by contemporary standards, but much more than Nolan would have you believe. I'd also like to add that Nolan decision to crash an action 747 into a wall looked resolutely underwhelming: it looked like the plane gently taxi-d into the wall, whereas a CGI or CGI-augmented crash would have allowed for a more energetic crash.
Part of the reason why films are not really ever done this way is that it becomes extremly limiting: I often get that with discussions about Azog, where I point out that it would have been very difficult to make a character look quite like that with prosthetics, to which people point out that if a design can't be achieved with prosthetics, then the design is wrong. I find this frankly preposterous: Gollum couldn't be done with prosthetics, but would someone lobby towards changing Gollum's design to one that was more amneable to being done "for real"? No, because the design comes first, and the way in which its realized comes a far, far second: filmmakers shouldn't limit their design aesthetic just becuase some analog-zealots want things all done "for real."
And, when it comes to it, that's the clencher: this idea that having things done "for real" makes for a bigger spectacle, because people had to "make" it and because it supposedly cost more. Guess what, it doesn't: its actually much more expensive to do a CGI environment than a big set, and takes just as much work: that the work is done with keyboards and code does not make it any less a work than that of a craftsman toiling on a physical set.
I don't begrudge Amazon for pandering to the "all practical effects" crowd, but sometimes this approach does activelly detract from a film. I associate it strongly with the Star Wars sequel trilogy: very flawed films regardless, but among their flaws, they tried so hard to veer as far as possible from the prequel trilogy's aesthetic that they sometimes lost any sense of what probably should be done with VFX: The puppet-Yoda of The Last Jedi looks stiff and curiously shriveled in some shots, and the puppeteered Maz Kanata of Episode IX looks much less convincing or expressive than the CGI, motion-captured Maz of Episode VII, all just so that that JJ Abrams could brag he did her "for real."
So lets not focus on the way effects are achieved too much, and just look at (1) how the effects end-up looking and (2) how they work in service of the story.

2022.01.21 09:26 Blitzerian- Mentality of 2000-2022 , are we regressing ?
Alright so I looked on reddit trying to find a topic where this question was asked , but I did not find anywhere , I dont know if this belongs in askphilosophy but anyway here is my question :
The past 10 years after being on all social medias and being the medias on TV as it is now , I can't help being frustrated by the new direction the mentality of today's society is going .
Denial of REALITY , this is how I see it . For most people ( even if they won't admit it ) they want everyone to be happy , everyone to be accepted , everyone to be equal , everyone should be able to do anything they want without the consequences and judgement of others . Fat people claiming they are healthy and telling everyone who don't agree that they should be ashamed , when their doctor tells them they will die in less than 5 years if they keep eating and not doing sports , smokers claiming they '' love '' tobacco and weed , are not addicted and that its not really harmful , black / arab people in gangs claiming they can't work because of their colors and that should justify their crimes ect ect ...
I feel like since TV / internet / social media is mainstream , it caused a big snow ball because now all eyes are on everyone , and everyone is trying to keep a victim image or a perfect image to not argue with anyone . What do you think about this ?

2022.01.21 09:26 Ak47pineapple Would be nice if they added some challenging content.
I remember in MHW there was tons of things to do before Iceborne.
And Rise, feels dry , not much to do at all.
You would expect a handheld MH have tons of content. Its like going back to the roots. But nooo, its dead!
How they gonna keep people playing 6 more months, if its dead for the past 6 months meta content-wise. And it took me 1 week to beat the game.
Dont give me some shitty apex rathian or rathalos, thats only fun for a 1 day.
Not even armor or anything, to at least complete that quest more than once.

2022.01.21 09:26 AuthKey [Question] Alert if event log does not contain text
I have a device procession an audio feed. Sometimes the feed drops. The device has been setup so that it sends a SNMP trap every 60 seconds if it is still processing audio data.
In the LibreNMS eventlog in can see the traps, but not I am trying to setup the alerting rule and my brain is not the best with the logic required for this apparently...
what if got is a rule: Inverted eventlog.datetime >= "'macros.past_5m'" AND eventlog.message REGEXP ".\AudioHeartbeat.*"*
if stopped the feed 5 minutes ago and no new traps have been received but no alert condition is made.
I must be missing something dumb but i hope someone can tell me what I need to have the rule generate an alert if "no trap has been received with text AudioHeartbeat in the last 5 minutes".
You may point and laugh at my dumbness afterwards :)

2022.01.21 09:26 Abutterpig The Seven Can’t win.
Now, I don’t mean to say that game is coming to end, but one thing is clear. The seven’s goals are not aligned with the game’s continuation. They aim to end the loop and free everyone from it- unfortunately that happens to be the core gameplay ‘loop’ which would mean the end of the game’s lifecycle. Io has to win this round at the very least which leads me on to my conclusion: Io is victorious at the end of book one.
What do mean by book one? Well, first two big coincidences, one, chapter 3 season 6 would be the games 24th season, secondly the number of seasons in a chapter has decreased by 2 so far and this would continue the trend 10-8-6. Also, most stories have a 3 act structure and since we have seen increased activity from the seven it leads me to believe we are in their endgame. Which is why I am calling now, for the future: Book two, chapter 1, season 1 will be the game’s 25th season which will kickoff a new storyline.
That is to say, what is brewing between IO, The Seven and The Last Reality will come to a head by the end of this chapter (predicted C3S6)- with IO winning.

2022.01.21 09:26 EternalATKE Update idea: RDO Smugglers Run
idk if this has been said before a lot of this is just old timey version of gta updates
I know the community mainly wants housing but I got bored and thought of a future update idea that one can only hope could happen eventually.
1) Buy a property/storefront In a port town/city like black water, Van Horn, Saint Denis, Annesburg, Thieves Landing etc…
The store front can be upgradable to have a small amount of passive income (+/-)$10/day. As well as plenty of cosmetic upgrades to make the inside of the store how you like. This could be weird if they want the store to be accessible like the other stores in game.
2) The underground portion of the game with focus on… Smuggling. You can purchase/order goods from black market traders that arrive on boat. Anything from spices, moonshine, gold, stolen medicine, weapons to maybe even fake capitale. The amount you can purchase, store, and profit are based on leveling unlocks similar to moonshiner and gta (this whole thing is kinda ripoff from gta updates if you didn’t guess but at least we know it’s realistic).
3) The player will sell the goods to gangs such as the del lobos gang, Martelli, Lemonye Raiders, random other underground contacts.
4) To make the doc more unique, focus can be put on the store front having a player quarters for changing outfits, weapon load out, a bed, and a feeling like the player actually owns the place and can live there. Could also have a stable. Additionally, focus can be put on an upgradable boat the player can use to complete ship smuggling missions at higher levels or specific random events. Could even put armor, slightly better engines, cosmetics, small cannon? (Depending in size of boat). *to prevent glitches to Mexico they might aswell just put up a complete player barrier, or not.
4) A smuggling empire can be created unlike gta. Players can buy multiple store front in different areas and connect them to get more profits. More store fronts should probably promote more co-op play.
5) this can be an addition to trader role and unlocked for trader rank 20 only? Could add 20 more rank roles to trader and an outlaw pass.
6) outlaw missions revolving around underground hits, robbing rival smuggling caravn in free roam randomly. Bank heist?
7) Extras: Add a new horse breed or two, boost stats in existing saddles the nag saddle. More saddle bag types? Holsters specifically for pistols that look normal. Hunter wagon skins, horse paint (designs can be unlocked, I really want those animal pelt capes the poachers wear too. Trade capitale instead of money to learn about shipments you can steal rather than buying smuggled supplies if you want.
