2022.01.21 09:30 inyakee Issues when connecting to USB-C monitor!

Hey everyone,
I'm not entirely sure if this is the right subreddit to be asking on but I have a problem.
A few months ago I noticed that occasionally when I plugged my laptop (Surface Laptop 3) into my monitor (via USB-C) none of my USB devices that were plugged into the monitor would be read. At first, I just ignored it and thought it would eventually be fixed with an update... fast forward to now and it's starting to bug me a little. The only thing I've been able to figure out is that when I plug my laptop in with the lid open it seems to be okay, but then it messes up some things with my f.lux???
Anyways, thanks for reading and I hope you can help!

2022.01.21 09:30 imafilmguy [Friendship] M19 - Looking for online friends to play games with on PSN and talk about comics, games, movies and music.

Hey there, I’m kinda looking for online friends to hang out with and play games with, I play on PlayStation (ps5 mostly + PSVR) at the minute and am going to be getting a Quest 2 in the near future.
I’m big into comics specially DC but also have a soft spot for Spider-Man and Spiderverse stuff and any form of comic entertainment via the books, movies, games and TV.
Also play a wide variety of games from Call Of Duty to Mirrors Edge to Cars 3: Driven To Win (I’m not kidding) open to multiplayer experiences but would also just like people to chat with while we play different games as well.
Hope to chat with you soon!

2022.01.21 09:30 andy_ems Learning Japanese mainly on iOS (or mobile in general)- a list of best value apps/tools

I’ve been self-teaching myself Japanese for about the last 3 years, and while I do use paper textbooks/reference books as well, most of my use of electronic resources has been on my iPhone or iPad. I don’t use a laptop or desktop computer for study. Here’s my tips for serious Japanese study on iOS (or mobile in general, as most of these apps aren’t iOS specific!):
LEARNING & REVIEW APPS - On iOS, pay the money for AnkiMobile. No, it’s not as full featured as the desktop version but it’s still super customisable and works perfectly well for being your main study/review hub, even with tens of thousands of cards. In order to decrease the pain of adding cards for your custom decks, I recommend importing a big premade deck (10,000 words plus, the more the better), and when you come across a new word, search for its card in your “dictionary deck” then set a due date so that it will come up with the rest of your reviews. If you really really really don’t want to use Anki but still want to review vocab electronically I recommend Renshuu (which is web but has an app now I think!) or the iKnow app (successor to the original source of the Core decks that are so popular.)
-For absolute beginners who don’t want to invest in an expensive textbook I highly recommend buying the Human Japanese apps. They’re some of the best grammar explanations I’ve seen for N5 (and early part of N4) level. I would recommend only using it for grammar, though, it’s too slow with kana/kanji in my opinion. And plenty of apps out there to teach you kana before you start. Also, while HJ has good vocabulary, there’s not enough of it so you’d definitely also need a supplemental Anki vocabulary deck like Core 2K/Tango N5/4 as well.

-For Kanji- There’s nothing app-wise that stands out to me other than web services like WaniKani (I personally use a textbook + Anki) but if you have an Apple Pencil and compatible iPad, I recommend the iKana Noto app for kanji writing practice.
-For verb conjugation practice for beginners, I actually quite like the Genki verb conjugation app- you don’t have to be using Genki to get value out of it and it’s not super expensive.
DICTIONARIES AND LOOKUPS -The iOS dictionary lookup function (that comes up when you select text) is your best friend. (Make sure you add the Japanese dictionaries in iOS settings!) Use it everywhere you can outside of Safari. Inside of Safari (maybe Chrome too?) use 10ten Japanese Reader which is basically a lookup extension like the Yomichan everyone talks about. It’s really excellent and even has pitch accent.
-Consider using the iOS Speak accessibility function if you just want to hear how a word is pronounced and you don’t know the kanji. It saves time in Anki too if you’re making cards from scratch, especially sentence cards.
-As far as actual dictionary apps, I use a few. The best completely free one on iOS is Shirabe Jisho IMO. For “Freemium” (basic dictionary with paid extras), I’ve tried Nihongo and Yomiwa and like both. It’s possibly worth shelling out for the premium access for one of these, as they both have OCR lookup via the device camera which is super useful for reading paper manga or playing video games in Japanese (Yomiwa’s OCR lookup is better, but Nihongo has the better dictionary setup!) They both have furigana extensions for Safari as part of their paid option.
-I also recommend buying an actual published J-E/E-J (and J-J once you get to early intermediate level) dictionary in e-book/app form- they’re excellent sources of example sentences too! The app for that on iOS is simply called Dictionaries (from Monokkaido) which is a shell app in which you can buy the actual dictionary content. They have a decent selection to choose from- I personally use Wisdom for J-E/E-J. For J-J, I really like the Meikyo dictionary- it’s not aimed at Japanese learners but it’s definitely learner friendly and even has optional furigana for definitions.
-The Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Dictionary kanji dictionary app is 100% worth the money. It’s such an excellent supplement to your kanji and general vocabulary learning, I can’t recommend it enough. There’s also companion apps for the Usage Guide (homophones) and Kanji Synonyms (kanji with similar meanings) and they’re both very good too.
READING -As noted above, if you’re reading paper books/manga (or electronic manga on a second device) or playing a video game, using an app with camera OCR dictionary lookup capabilities like Yomiwa makes things a lot easier.
-For buying published ebooks and manga in Japanese, I decided to skip Amazon/Kindle as it can be a faff with being a non-Japan resident (but if you are go for it!) I use Bookwalker and Kinoppy (Kinokuniya) for buying Japanese ebooks- you have to use their apps to read, but I don’t mind that and they’re both non-JP resident friendly. The Kinoppy app is a better experience for novels and nonfiction but it’s easier to buy manga on Bookwalker (you have to buy most Kinoppy manga on the Kinokuniya website which is a pain.) There’s quite a few JP textbooks available as ebooks too, including Genki and Quartet.
-If you’re really stuck on a sentence and have to resort to a translator, use DeepL- you can get to it on the web but they also have an app that makes it a bit quicker. So much better than google translate. The new iOS translate lookup function is also good for getting quick meanings of individual words especially.
-Once you’ve learned N5/N4 level grammar, a subscription to Satori Reader (also on the web but I prefer the app) is well worth it for reading practice geared towards Japanese learners with a surprising amount of grammar tips integrated throughout the stories. It’s run by the same people who did Human Japanese, and so even has a “Bridge” grammar explanation series now for people coming directly from Human Japanese Intermediate (which only teaches about half of N4, for some reason.)
I’ve tried many more different app-based resources, but these are my favourites which (if paid) all provide a really high level of value for money over the long term. I also wanted to stress there are now options on mobile for almost every type of resource and language learning tool so definitely don’t feel like you can’t use your mobile device as your main or only study computer for Japanese, you definitely can. Hopefully this will help some people out there!

2022.01.21 09:30 AcademicCounty Told my new boss if they expected me to work more, I expected to be paid more

Disclaimer; this happened in August of 2021, but I was inspired by the recent post by the jeweler who refused to be bullied by his boss.
I worked for a company which managed a series of mental health care offices. I worked in the corporate office. We had a very lean back office and I handled all of the accounting functions, from journal entries through month end and reporting. I also calculated payroll twice a month which was especially challenging because the health care providers had many different ways of being paid and I had to calculate them manually in a spreadsheet. I was paid a bit below what I was worth (graduate degree, CPA, 10 years of experience) but I liked the job and my coworkers (including the CFO, whom I reported to) and was told I could be moved to Controller in the future so I was content for the time being.
We were acquired by another firm in early 2021. Our CEO was moved down and reported to the new CEO and my boss, the CFO was given his walking papers. One of my accountants quit due to the changes and they put out a job req at their corporate headquarters, not where I sat (big red flag to me). Due to the shrinking of my team, I had more on my plate and had several discussions with my new boss about a raise. The acquiring company already had a Controller so that path was closed to me so I wanted to be paid what I was worth. We went back and forth for a few months until I had enough and scheduled a meeting to talk with my new boss while she was in town. Again, this happened a few months ago but these are the details as best as I can remember them.
I started the conversation on a very benign level, making general inquiries about my place in the new company and what I could expect to be doing going forward. There was a lot of talk on her part but of course talk is ultimately worth nothing. I shifted the conversation to my real point and told her I was unhappy with the direction that our team was being taken and that we were not being treated well under the new leadership. I told her that I needed to be paid more to match the additional workload I took on with the shrinking of our team. She told me that I needed to "meet the company halfway" and not expect a raise until after the new year. I looked at her and said, "so I'm expected to meet the company halfway but they won't meet me halfway?". I don't recall exactly what was said but effectively, yes. I said "consider this my two weeks" and left the office.
Here's an interesting follow-up to this story. They told me to leave that same day and that they would still pay out my severance and unused vacation time. All of my responsibilities fell to a payroll clerk who ultimately wanted to move to HR. He left shortly thereafter and they worked him, with OT, until his last day to try to make sure all of our duties were documented and covered. I guess they shouldn't have underestimated what I did when they showed me the door! I'm on a new gig now that pays almost twice as much and I work less than 10 miles from the house, so I win!
